Bathroom Gifts: 7 Handmade Upgrades from Etsy Shops

Bright white bathroom with plants and a laundry basket

The bathroom is the room people use every day and upgrade least, so small handmade pieces make a real difference. These seven picks cover drying off, with a Turkish towel, a teak mat and a towel rail; the sink, with a soap dish and a toothbrush holder; and the tub and shower, with a bath caddy and a linen shower curtain. Several need a size chosen to fit the room.

Extra Soft Turkish Towel, 100% Cotton, SERENE

1 A Turkish Cotton Towel

A 100% cotton Turkish towel with tassels, about 90 by 185 cm (35 by 73 inches), in coral red or mint green.

Best for:

Someone whose bathroom towels are thick, slow to dry and past their best.

Why choose this:

A flat-woven towel is light, dries fast and looks good hanging in a small bathroom.

Good to know:

This pick is one towel in the color you choose. The listing also has a two-color set, but it doesn't spell out what's in it, so it isn't the recommendation here. Returns aren't accepted.

2 A Live-Edge Wooden Bath Caddy

A hand-oiled live-edge bath caddy from Designbyronders, which ships from New Lenox, Illinois. It comes in lengths from 28 to 40 inches, with a leather handle on one end; the one pictured is 28 by 10 inches.

Best for:

Someone who takes long baths with a book, a drink or a phone nearby.

Why choose this:

It turns an ordinary tub into a place to settle in, and it stands upright beside the tub when not in use.

Good to know:

Measure the tub from outer edge to outer edge first, choose a length longer than that, and enter the width when you order, as the shop asks. Handles on both ends for a freestanding tub are available on request. The shop accepts exchanges within 30 days but doesn't mention returns.

3 A Self-Draining Ceramic Soap Dish

A stoneware soap dish with the saucer built in as one piece and two drain holes. It measures about 4.5 by 4 by 2 inches and comes in several glazes.

Best for:

Someone who uses bar soap and is tired of it sitting in a puddle.

Why choose this:

Bar soap that can drain lasts longer and leaves less mess by the sink.

Good to know:

Some glazes sell out, so check which colors are offered when you order. Returns are accepted within 14 days.

4 A Teak Shower Mat

A solid teak shower or bath mat, left without stains or oils. It comes in three numbered styles and several sizes from about 20 by 13.5 to 35.5 by 20 inches.

Best for:

Someone who steps out onto a damp fabric mat every morning.

Why choose this:

A wooden mat dries between showers and makes the bathroom feel a little more like a spa.

Good to know:

The listing names the styles only by number, so choose the style from the photos and the size to fit the space in front of the shower. The shop makes no non-slip claim. Returns are accepted within 30 days.

Best for:

A couple or family whose toothbrushes share a cup on the sink.

Why choose this:

Separate slots keep brushes apart and upright, and the handmade glaze dresses up the sink.

6 An Ash Wood Towel Rail with Five Hooks

An ash wood wall rail, about 50 by 8.5 by 2.5 cm (20 by 3.3 by 1 inches), with five white metal hooks. The shop says it holds up to 10 kg.

Best for:

Someone whose towels and robes end up over the door or on the floor.

Why choose this:

A row of hooks gives every towel a place to dry and keeps the bathroom tidier.

Good to know:

The listing doesn't mention mounting hardware, so plan on screws and anchors that suit their wall. It ships from Latvia, and returns are accepted within 30 days, with the buyer paying return shipping.

Linen Shower Curtain with Waterproof Liner

7 A Linen Shower Curtain with a Built-In Liner

A linen shower curtain with a white waterproof polyester liner sewn in, plus back tabs and heading tape for hanging. It comes in ten colors and many sizes, and custom sizes are offered.

Best for:

Someone with a plain plastic shower curtain they'd like to replace with something softer-looking.

Why choose this:

The curtain is the biggest piece of fabric in most bathrooms, so linen changes the whole room.

Good to know:

The listing is for one curtain, and the liner can't be removed. Rings aren't mentioned, so plan on hanging it from the rod by its tabs or using rings you already have. Measure the rod and height before choosing a size. It's made to order, and returns aren't accepted.
